PS3 Yellow Light of Death Fix

by Jeff

If you’re tired of seeing the yellow light of deathon your PS3, then here’s some new information I learned that may help you fix this problem once and for all.

Remember that the YLOD can mean a number of things and if you don’t know what to do, you should try some of these repair tips as a starting points.

PS3 Overheating

This is a common situation that is very easy to fix.  This should always be the first step you take to solve the yellow light of death problem on your PS3.

You will first want to shut the console off for a good 20-30 minutes.  Basically, you want to let it cool down to the point where it should start up again.

It is also a good idea to move the console into another location away from where it was previously.  You never know when you’re working with electronics…

You will also want to check the cables.  I recommend unplugging every single cable and untangling the mess (if you have one) behind the TV.

Get the cables looking new again and reattach them to the TV and the console.

Loose or broken cables can cause the YLOD to occur.

You can also try to unplug the hard drive in the PS3.  I have heard that this has fixed some of the problems because the hard drive can become loose inside of the system.

Don’t ask me how but it just happens sometimes and it’s best to try to see if this is causing the problem.

Make sure you’re doing this carefully since you can damage the hard drive and other parts if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Ship Playstation 3 to Sony

This is always an option and you can do this if your warranty is still good.

You’ll have to wait 6 weeks or so before getting it back but it won’t cost you anything.

If your warranty is up, it will cost you minimum $150 for this repair job.

If that’s pocket change for you then by all means go ahead and do it.

Fix Your PS3 YLOD By Yourself

This is how I fixed my PS3 when it broke and it’s why I decided to build this simple blog.

I wanted to help others that suffered from this issue like me so that they can fix their consoles as well.

I was lucky when I came across a guide that had videos and the whole 9 yards.  I had my PS3 up and running again in under an hour.

I can’t say that you’ll fix your system as fast as I did, but I no longer have the yellow light of death.

Go ahead and visit PS3 Lights Fix if you’d like to see the resource that taught me how to fix my PS3 on my own in my own garage and saving a ton of $$$ in the process.

Here are some additional resources you can check out for more repair tips and information:

On May 4th, my PS3 got the YLoD (Yellow Light of Death).

  • Could somebody please tell me how to fix it/get it fixed?Because my warranty expired. I have an old fat model, an 80GB MGS4 bundle from June of ’08.
  • And could you please explain what causes the YLoD? I hear it’s because of hardware failure, but could somebody explain me the details?
  • My bro says it could be because ofthe hackers uploading a virus or something. Sounds like bullcrap to me, but he tells me that his friends, some time after the outage, suddenly couldn’t turn on their PS3s because the hackers uploaded a virus before they downed the network, could that be true (Probably not)?

and a response:

best thing to do is go to youtube. theres a temporary fix for it. u need some thermal paste, heat gun, and follow the instruction on to how to open up the ps3, once its fixed, sell it asap to the nearest gamestop. then use that money to buy urself a new ps3 slim, and u wont have this issue again. one of the main reason of ps3s getting the YLOD is cuz of the cheap thermal paste thats on the chip or w.e u call it.
